First of all, welcome to the forum.

If you're interested in an an organised Barmy Army tour, then you can register your interest without obligation here:

http://thomsonsport.com/event/barmy-arm ... r-interest

That way you'll be the first to know when they go on sale. Ashes packages do tend to sell pretty quickly.

If you plan to travel independently, then there will be plenty of help and advice available on here as to how to go about it from those who have been before. Before starting a new thread though, do try and read through previous posts to see whether your question has already been answered. This will avoid lots of repeat threads.

Something else we would request is that when asking for accommodation recommendations, please give some idea of whether you want budget, mid-range or luxury. Lots of people in the past have come on here asking whether anyone can recommend a "good hotel." Some people will be looking to pay £12 per night (or less if they can) for a dorm bed in a backpacker hostel, while for others the sky is the limit, so one man's idea of good accommodation can be another man's nightmare!

Australia used to be cheap. It certainly isn't anymore, especially the beer, but if cost is an issue for you, you'll find plenty of money saving tips on here.

Sorry Harvey your wrong again, the prices of commodities in Australia haven't risen too much in recent years it's our dollar that is a lot more valuable than your pound nowadays,do you remember when you Poms used to brag about getting 2.5 dollars for your quids??? well those days are gone now and WE enjoy the exchange rates when we visit United Nations. and as for the beer??? We get bathed in better stuff than you lot drink, and it is about the same temperature too.

If you can find a bureau de change that rates the Australian dollar as "more valuable" than the pound, then I recommend you buy some pounds. I think you'll struggle though.

This thread is aimed at people looking to tour Australia for the first time, mainly those from the UK. These people are sometimes known as "first timers," hence the title of the thread. Given that people from the UK tend to be paid in pounds, Australia is indeed no longer cheap for visitors from the UK. That's why the Australian tourist industry is struggling, because it is no longer seen as a value for money destination.

Regarding getting bathed in beer, I take it you're referring to the stuff that gets thrown in the air at The MCG along with assorted rubbish and cups of urine during Mexican waves? That's assuming there are enough people in the ground to have a Mexican wave and that the Sri Lankans who outnumber your fans by approximately 10 to 1 when SL are the opposition feel like joining in.

God knows where you get your facts from Harvey, you must be making them up,or else you are going a bit "doity",Australia's Tourist Industry is thriving better than ever and Sydney is just about equal with London as a tourist attraction, also when the MCG has a "small" crowd of,say 50000 which is nearly double Lords and any other Pommie cricket midden,it seems empty,...I went to the MCG during our winter to see an AFL match and there was only 37000 crowd and I felt very lonely....

PS I see you lot are getting back to your normal level at Cricket !!!! even India have just given you showers a hell of a belting,...ROLL ON THE ASHES.

The ongoing decline of the Australian tourist industry is well documented. Here's just one of a number of sources:

http://www.ibisworld.com.au/industry/de ... indid=1903

The crowd at the MCG v SL was nothing like 50,000 and without the large number of Sri Lankans who showed up, the ground would have been almost empty. Australian fans don't turn up when their team is on a losing streak.

You were feeling lonely? I can't imagine why that would be.

As far as playing in India goes, you obviously don't remember what happened to Australia last time they were out there!

You astound me Harvey how you twist ANY statements in newspapers and make them suit YOUR STORIES.You can look at several columns about Australian tourism and each one will differ from the others, the one you picked out was obviously from a journo who dislikes Australia, but which ever way YOU look at it the fact remains that Australias economy is one of the strongest in the world far better than the crap that your polis have got you lot into...Anyway,it is pretty obvious that you showers on this forum only want poms to contribute to to the garbage shown on here,it's clear that you only want "yes" men to crawl up each others rectum so that you think you are top of the midden so I will sign off with the old adage,..."GOOD BYE AND F*** YOU ALL.

Oh dear. The article I linked to was not from a newspaper or written by a journalist. It was the summary of a much more detailed market research report published by a Melbourne-based market research organisation.

To buy the full detailed report would cost you a mere $845 + GST, but the summary gives the "growth" of the Australian tourism industry as minus 1.5%, which is sufficient to prove my point, I think.

Anyway, goodbye and thank you for providing any first timers reading this thread with an excellent insight into the kind of mentality they can expect to encounter when they're downunder for the first time.
