Incredibly sad and shocking news. Never met George personally but in the 7 years I've been on here it was always clear what a highly respected and loved character he was. The stories of his antics have become legendary!!

I'll be watching closely at 2pm local time on day one of the test to witness what I'm sure is going to be a fitting tribute from the Barmy Army.

RIP George.

A tragic loss of a thoroughly decent and very popular man. He will be sadly missed, more than he himself could have imagined. Condolences to George's family.

I've known George since the mid 1970's, when we both followed Sunderland AFC away from home. I subsequently lost contact with him but made contact again through the SAFC message board.

I used to meet up with George and his faithful dog for the last session of Durham CCC home games by the old scoreboard and also for the T20 games, when Yvonne also used to come through.

George gave me an insight into his thinking last year but both myself and my 10 year old son, who is a fanatical DCCC fan, were very sad to hear of George's untimely passing on Sunday (I received a phone call from Peterborough where SAFC were playing).

We will be up early on Tuesday to witness the BA tribute to him.

George may be gone but he remains NOT OUT. His last walk to whatever pavilion he walked towards will undoubtedly have been eventful!

Can someone just clarify the timing of ... From Kev's earlier post I thought the tribute was going to take place at 2pm Dubai time which is 10am UK time to coincide with funeral??

Correct mate, if you are in Dubai it will take place in the ground, during play, at 2pm Dubai time which will coincide with the funeral UK time.

I only heard the news yesterday and I was shocked. It's so sad that Podgey decided to take such a step. My thoughts and condolances go to his family and friends. I knew him for a number of years and while I didn't know him as well as many on here, I knew him well enough to know that he is going to be missed in the Cricketing and Footballing communities as well as by his family.

A man of many talents, who could be larger than life, loud, happy, inventive, commercial, funny, dedicated to the causes he believed in, straight talking, and generous. One of my lasting memories will be seeing him in Bloemfontein in a bar after the Germany v England game in the Football World Cup in South Africa after the Germans had yet again prevailed and with atleast 30% of the people in there being Germans.

Podgey was sitting out on the balcony with us drowning our sorrows and promising that "next time, we'd get it right" He suddenly looked down at the holdall he had with about 50 baseball caps with the St. George cross on them. He bemoaned the fact that he was stuck with them and almost before he had finished saying that, his face lit up in that mischevious look he had and a glimmer of an idea was forming in his mind. You could almost hear the cogs clicking over in his brain.

Podgey went up to the barman and asked for a marker pen and came back to the table and wrote a 4 in the top left hand side of the St George's Cross and a 1 in the top right hand side. he announced he was going to sell the cap to a German and went over to a table with a few German lads at it. We thought that was a cheeky idea and had a great laugh about it. It didn't deter him for a second and a minute later he came back with a R100 laughing his head off. Half an hour later he had sold all the modified baseball caps to most of the Germans in the bar and Podgey was sitting there with a huge grin.

A true charecter and one who will leave a big gap whether it be with family, Sunderland Football Club, Durham CC, and England Cricket and Football followers.

RIP George.
