I am sure others noticed that on viewing the crowd at the final in Mumbai, there were very few if any non wealthy indian fans in the ground. I understand that the tickets were priced around 14000 rupes. The situation that is left is that genuine indian fans, who should have been given the chance to witness such a great event, were left in a position where they would never afford such a ticket. The result then is that every member of the crowd was there because they could afford to witness history, or were enjoying the corprorate band wagon.
Another ICC/BCCI shambles, preventing genuine working class fans from being at the final.

Exactly. This debate about ticket prices goes on and on. As Airliebird9 says - 'its just the way it is'. And thats the way it always will be.

And talking about poor people by the way, I was in SL for the quarter and semi finals. I was offered 10 times plus face value for my tickets. Not by the rich middle classes, but by waiters in the hotel, tuk tuk drivers, and shop assistantsn etc.

There were many things disappointing about the final.

Being searched 10 times on the way in. Expected really.
Tiny seats with hardly any gap between them. Not so expected.
Water supplied but without any cups being available. Typical of Indian (dis)organisation.
Bugger all food, again.
No pass-outs, again.
5,500 rude, miserable, officious cops meaning that a crafty fag was out of the question.
Rich Indians.
Sachin not getting a ton.
Sri Lanka losing.

We ended up leaving very early and enjoyed watching it at Gokul with Big John and Cheltenham Harry much more.
C'est la vie.

Tickets at R1500 were also available by the way. For the not so rich Indian fan.

I'm really ambiguous about this last trip. Firstly let me say I think you are all right in parts.
1. The ICC completely spoiled any enthusiasm or spontaneity (for me). Whilst it had to be secure, taking away sandwiches, combs etc was OTT and they knew it. Also allowed little jobsworths to try and lord it. Pathetic.
2. Conversely, the Indians made up for the ICC with their ultra enthusiasm.
3. The catering really did let the show down. From no food in some venues to poor quality overall. Lack of drinks also a major prob.
4. Pass outs. Clearly allowed on the tickets but subject to the above mentioned ars.....s. Even had to get new tickets at Bangalore.
5. Ticketing from start to finish. My sympathies for those of you still in negotiation, it was the only thing I got right and did'nt cost me extra - not opting for Indian couriers.
6. Stadiums were fantastic. Particularly impressed by the improvements to Chennai, unrecognisable. (Note to Lancs CCC stadium committee -look what we could have done !!!)
7. Our performances, whilst I never thought we'd win it I expected a bit more. Hindsight says we did well after an epic winter, and like everyone else WC or Ashes, do me a favour. No-one can say they did'nt get VFM at our games.
I could go on, but you get my drift.
One day I'll work out whether I enjoyed it enormously/pleasantly. For now I'm not sure. :?

I think everyone is entitled to feel confused/pissed off at the World Cup, to be honest.

I enjoyed England-India immensely, because we had a group of us together, were able to get food into our seats, and more importantly the game was great.

I didn't enjoy England-Ireland. Not because England lost, but because with a much smaller crowd the over-officious security was much worse. The lack of water, decent food, etc. was much more apparent. I only went to Bengaluru, but I can imagine other venues in India being the same.

The saving grace of the tournament was surely the enthusiasm of the locals, without that the ICC awfulness would have been much more apparent.

I agree with all these comments (well, maybe except George's because I can't understand what it is he's trying to say: that there were lots of ordinary Indians in the grounds? no ordinary Indians?). But, sadly, it's normal now. Since the South Africa World Cup in 2003, and maybe even earlier than that, intensive searching has been the norm - not so much for security risks but to stop ambush marketing. People were having water taken off them if it was not the correct sponsor - a health and safety issue, but that's of no importance alongside the ICC's desire to rack up maximum profits for their corporate sponsors. It's the same at football World Cups, and has been for years: as much as try to wear anything that's not approved, and you're out. ICC, FIFA - I'm sure they learn from each other how to squeeze out every last penny from fans, and in doing so they don't care at all if the excitement and spontaneity is squeezed out too. Look at the Champions League Final or the WC Final - half the ground is empty for the first 15 minutes of the second half as the suits keep troughing. Look at Ireland being booted into touch by the ICC. And don't get me started on the Olympics. The point of big sporting events nowadays is not to enjoy sport, it's to make money for sports federations, who are at bottom just businesses nowadays, and also to allow public money to be siphoned off into the profits of construction companies and also to boost the profile of self-serving politicians. It's a tribute to the wonder of sport that we can still get a thrill out of things like England v India in Bangalore, but any sporting excitement emerges despite, not because of, the ICC, FIFA, IOC etc
