MAC...Are you or any other the others visiting Sri Lanka?

Yes we 'all' are, including Shirley. 23 /3 to 9/4. Meeting Jim and the lads there as they are off to India next week and on to SL in Jan/Feb.
Acronym tells me where you're from, but who is this I ask myself ?

One question though - are they saying you do not need to complete the online ETA thing i.e. you just bowl up in SL prior to 31 March (providing you have booked you trip before 31 December) and they issue a visa gratis?

That's the way it looks to me. I've emailed for confirmation of this and if I get it anytime soon, I'll post it.

Had the email below back from the visa dept at the SL High Commission in that there London this morning, basically confirming what I posted yesterday.

ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) Pre Visa Arrangement will be implement from 1st of January 2012 but During the grace period between 30th September to 31st December 2011, the tour operators and individuals can arrange tours and advanced booking to arrive in Sri Lanka up to 31st March 2012, without going through ETA.

If you are in that grace period and already booked flights & accommodation, confirming that you can apply for on-arrival visa.

Regards
Visa Officer

On a purely selfish note...I'm reading this as if you've booked up....and leaving the country on or before the 31 March, there's no need to apply for the ETA??
Is that correct??
Thanks for help chaps...

That seems to be what they are saying Billy. If you book flights and accommodation before December 31 and arrive in SL before March 31, you can get a free on-arrival visa and don't have to bother with an ETA.

I recall from my last trip in 2005 - which was tsunami-related rather than cricket-related - they handed out forms on the plane which you had to fill in and hand over to the immigration people on arrival. They then whacked a stamp in your passport. I presume something similar will be the case this time.

I shall print out the visa officer's email and take it with me though in case of a jobsworth outbreak.

Bloody hell, I've created a monster!

Rather than having to forward aforementioned email to everyone individually, which is becoming a trifle time-consuming, I'll copy it below and you can all do the copy and paste thing.

Just don't blame me if you're all consigned to the holding pen at Bandaranaike Airport and forced to listen to Coldplay until your ears bleed.
