Well, the good news is we don't have to go to Hambantota!

The other good news is that if we don't make the group stage, it's off down to Galle to cheer on the women.

Sounds like a win-win situation for anyone planning on going! Except.... doesn't it tend to rain a lot at that time of year? :?

Hmmmm, I quite fancied a trip out to Hambantota...just to see the ground and the area over towards the east coast....i know its a pian in the ass to get to but hey....
I am disappointed that it looks like my time will be spent on the train between kandy and colombo, and there are no games near the likes of hik or una...I am still planning of doing some beach chilling at some point. So I will have to do some toing and froing i think.
I was hoping the lively atmosphere of the last 20 20 wc could be replicated. Maybe if galle had some games, but as it is, i doubt it.
Oh well, it will be a great event and I will manage to getthe whole thing in.

Nothing to stop you going to Hambantota for one of the games not involving England that are being played there.

SL playing SA in Hambantota the day before ECB play India in Colombo. Done the (leaving 5.00am) Colombo to Yala (to get there lunchtime) previously ... not recommended ... if they still haven't opened the expressway ... :o

Yup Harv, that is the plan, but it will have toeither be the opening game, or the sl sa one, which is pushing it for the england match. mind you, i have done the aragam bay to colombo 12 hr ride before...accompanied by arrack, makes it a lot smoother ride.
Annual leave already booked!!!

Just had a look at the fixtures and wanted a bit of advice if possible. I went to Barbados for the last T20 and the way they structured the super 8's meant that everyone played in the same place whereas now we will end up in either Pallekele or Colombo and play all our matches in 1 place however we won't know which one it will be until a couple of days before.

The obvious question is how easy it to get accomodation at late notice or alternatively book 2 and cancel one? Is there anywhere decent to stay near each venue (I'm travelling with the wife who usually doesn't like to slum it!).

Is it possible to be based midway between the 2 grounds or is the travelling too bad especially considering the return journey will be late at night.

Is 2 weeks in Colombo going to send me mad? Is it like 2 weeks in Mumbai which most definitely would send me mad! Any decent beach/coastal places near to Colombo? Could you travel to and from Kandy from there if we ended up in that side of the draw or would it end up being a pain in the arse?

Sorry for all the questions but I've not been to SL before so any help is much appreciated.

2 weeks in colombo will ruin your mind....2 days is enough. folks will base themselves at Mt Lavinia in south Colombo. It is about 3 hrs by road between the 2 places, although the Kandy ground is probably 30 mins the other side of Kandy. There are a few places you could base yourself between Kandy and Colombo, but with either a 3hr ride by road, or a 4 hr train ride, I think it is very do able to be in col or Kan and commute when needed (not return the same night). My plan may well be to base myself at Hikkaduwa and commute for the Premadassa games (maybe 2 1/2 hrs), and I will have to be in Kandy for those games.
There are loads of places to stay in Kandy. Depends on your type of digs. I imagine the better places will fill up quickly in Kandy, but there are plenty of more budget placesin Kandy and just outside of it. I remeber having a great place (real swank room) just east of the lake in the hills for 1000 rupes a night, and the guy who owned it gave me a lift into town whenever i wanted.
I would forget any commute after the games...the roads are lethal in daylight, never mind at night.
My main bit of advice would be to get a lonely planet book. That way you can figure out places to base yourself and to stay. I am a budget travaller and dont know too much about more exensive places to stay. One thing I would say with regard to this is that you dont have to spend£50 a night to get a really good place!

Eggmanfoo thanks for the info.

So its Mt Lavinia for Colombo and anywhere in Kandy. I quite like the idea of somewhere like Hikkaduwa for some of the trip. Are the trains to Colombo and Kandy OK from there?

Is Kandy any good for a longer stay? How would you sum up Colombo and Kandy to help give me an idea of what to expect? I have only been to Mumbai in that part of the world so any comparison would be helpful.

I'm not really too fussed what it's like but the Mrs is starting to get into cricket and I want to make sure she enjoys it too so that she wants to come on more trips.
