Just realised after looking at the ICC site that Englands super 8 matches will definitely be in Kandy as you keep the seeding regardless of whether you come 1st or 2nd.

That makes my question about a longer stay in Kandy even more relevant now!

Eggmanfoo thanks for the info.

So its Mt Lavinia for Colombo and anywhere in Kandy. I quite like the idea of somewhere like Hikkaduwa for some of the trip. Are the trains to Colombo and Kandy OK from there?

Is Kandy any good for a longer stay? How would you sum up Colombo and Kandy to help give me an idea of what to expect? I have only been to Mumbai in that part of the world so any comparison would be helpful.

I'm not really too fussed what it's like but the Mrs is starting to get into cricket and I want to make sure she enjoys it too so that she wants to come on more trips.

Colombo is a noisy, chaotic city, and not instantly (if at all) likeable. The Mt. Lav/Dehiwala area offers relative peace and quiet if you're not too close to the busy Galle Road, as well as bars and places to eat.

Kandy makes a good base for vising various sites, and is quite atmospheric and interesting in its own right.

Re. the trains, from Hikkaduwa you can get direct to Colombo, but for Kandy you'd probably have to change trains in Colombo. There used to be an afternoon train that went direct to Kandy, but I don't know for sure whether that still runs.

The trains in SL get very crowded, and most are not reservable, so your best bet for getting a seat is to try and board it at the station where it starts its journey. For example, many trains to Galle start from Maradana, so it's better to board the train there rather than Fort. Likewise, if your train to Kandy starts from Fort, it's best to board it there, even if it also stops at Maradana. One or two trains from Colombo to Kandy have a first class observation coach with reserved seating that can be booked ahead. Try and do Colombo-Kandy or v.v. in daylight for some spectacular views. Get a right hand seat for Colombo-Kandy and a left-hand one going back.

I understand there are currently line closures for "improvements" on the Colombo-Galle line. I gather the work is meant to be finished by the time you'll be there, but whether it will be or not, who knows?

Excellent info thanks for that.

Any particular areas in Kandy you would advise aiming for? I assume getting to and from Pallekele will be no problem from there?

Kandy is a great place to visit and stay. It's not like a Colombo/Mumbai/Kuala Lumpur type monster. Pallekele is out of town so you wouldn't be looking to stay nearby. Far better to be in Kandy itself, where there is every concievable type of accommodation, and travel to the great variety of sites you can get to relatively easily by both public transport (train/bus) or taxi/tuk tuk. It has a 'centre' (lake/temple of the tooth/botanical gardens) but at the same time is quite spread out! I prefer to stay in one of the higher points, just for the spectacular views (of the town, Mahaweli river, etc) but the centre is just as good.

So if you stay in Kandy, whats the preferred method of transport to and from the ground? I don't want the Antigua experience where the nearest public transport stops about 5 miles away.

Pallekele is to the east of Kandy, apparently about a half hour drive, even though it's only a couple of miles out of town. In SL a driver plus his car is the affordable and comfortable mode of transport but the hardened types will no doubt recommend a tuk-tuk, which is probably how I'd approach it, as there will be plenty of them vying for your rupees. Public transport on match days will be jam-packed with the locals as it'll be much cheaper and probably save you all of a couple of pounds, at most
