New Zealand is one of my favourite countries, and I really liked all of it.
However if I HAD to make a choce between the two islands, it would be the South Island.
One third of the population and something like two thirds of the area, make it great to get away from it all.
Mind you I went for a hike down the Whakatane river in the North Island and only saw one person in two days, so it is not too overpopulated there either.

With a total population approaching 4.5 million and a land area of almost 104,000 square miles, there certainly is plenty of open space to get yourself lost in if you wanted!

Compare that to the UK population of 62 million crammed into 92,500 square miles, it puts it into some kind of perspective :-)

Great information all the way through this thread.
I have been here in NZ since the last tour and can recomend spending time out side of the test traveling and seeing what the rest of the country holds.
Maybe looking at hiring a camper or similar small van and driving between the tests, fingers crossed that NZ cricket pick the test order to allow this.
The venues were meant to be announced this week not reason for the delay has been given.
I can recomend climbing Franz Joseph a big glacier north of Queenstown, a night here is also a must on you way to or from Dunedin, should there be a test.
Bay of Islands as mentioned is stunning, coromandel, south island west coast the sounds in the south of the S island aer also great, not been there myself yet though.

When dates announced look on www.nakedbus.co.nz for cheap busses, www.grabaseat.co.nz/ for cheap air flights there are many others but these are a good place to start.

cannot wait for the masses to arrive! any other questions ask away, I will help as much as I can.
