Is anybody hiring a campervan or has done from the previous tours. Me and my mate are doing the Queens Town/Dunedin and Wellington tests, but will leave the campervan in Picton before going over to Wellington. Does anybody have any recommended sites they have used this time or previous? It would be much appreciated lads. (will be picking it up in Christchurch too) |

(will be picking it up in Christchurch too) Hi Barry, did a fair bit of reseach, and found the the newest (this is important for reliability in my mind) with all required facilities (toilet/shower) and then most cost effective that I found were Apollo www.apollocamper.com/. I am picking mine up in CCH, and will take it all the way to AKL. We are staying at the Leith Valley Touring Park when we are in Dunedin, as this looks to be the closest to the ground - Less of a stagger!! $25 per night for a powered site. Not made any other plans as yet, but as the schedule is tight will probably not get much of a chance to site see in the South island... |

We've booked ours through Wicked http://www.wickedcampers.co.nz picking up and dropping off in Christchurch. These are smaller vans than Lanesra has booked (people carrier sized) and so don't have an toilet/shower but most commercial campsites and touring parks will provide facilities. The DOC campsites are a bit more basic with usually just a longdrop type toilet. We're also booked into Leith Valley Touring Park in Dunedin (powered sites are NZD38=£19 for 2 people) and Queenstown Lakeview Holiday Park (powered sites are NZD44=£22 for 2 people). |

Sorry all I was quoting AUD for the price that I got (early bird special as we booked in August)...... As for the "Long drop", not sure that I could get the Mrs within a mile of that !!! |

On the last tour the best option was Wicked Campers who were the cheapest, and most basic. Essentially just a people carrier with a matress, which does a job. However, I went again last year and Jucy were by far the best option and had a range of vans. If you get the old model you can get a decent camper but at a very low price. Ours had a dvd player and shower but still cost the same as the most basic model as it was the old fleet before the new branding. Jucy will also sort your ferry from north to south at a discount and their drop off points are convenient and they provide a shuttle unlike Wicked which were various bus rides away. With regards to campsites you get what you pay for. DOC pretty much free and very basic as described. In some areas you can get very good campsites with excellent facilities for cooking for about $25 with a powered site. In general though the prices tend to fluctuate all the time depending how busy they are. Last time in Napier I seem to remember having to pay a fair amount as it was such a small town. |
