You can take the ferry out to Somes Island, or if you have transport and don't mind the walk, there's the scenic trip out to the Pencarrow Lakes at the entrance to the harbour. Also down by the south coast, out where I live and where I go running are the Red Rocks. You might also want to pay a trip to Zealandia, but only for the reserve - the visitor centre is a huge rip off. Because Zealandia is very close to it, the free option with plenty of day walks is Otari-Wilton's Bush. Which is in the shadow to Te Ahumairangi Hill (previously known as Tinakori Hill, and many people will still call it that), which is covered in little walks and full of little surprises. On the other side of the city and within easy walking distance from Courtenay Place is the town belt at Mount Victoria. They filmed some of the Lord of the Rings there. It's worth a trip. |

For a good whole day out head over to Martinborough and go around the wineries or head up the coast to Waikanae(50 mins from town) for safe sandy beaches, warm water and a good flat pitch for beach cricket. If you want a closer beach, head to scorching bay (but it ain't so warm) |
