I watched Saffers win at the MCG in 2008/9 and at the SCG. was about $6 for a schooner of p1ssy beer (about £3 then, about £4 now) Don't know if they put the price up for Ashes tests or whether inflation has put that up in the meantime anyway. Anyway we smuggled in vodka in water bottles (I realise this is not everyone's cup of tea) and then buying coke in the ground and mixing. Seemed ridiculous spending about $60 on beer and not even being tipsy. So my question is - Have they wised up to this yet? I've heard of a few other people doing this.

Yes they have, although "wised up" is not an expression I would tend to use in connection with the cowboy security firms they tend to employ. They do normally check seals on mineral water bottles, so you'll need one with a seal that at least looks as if it's intact.

Oh dear, that's a shame. And am I right in thinking that that p1ssy beer was the only alcohol to be bought? You couldn't buy wine in the ground could you? If that beer is the only option and I can't smuggle it in might just have to go sober. Which would be cheaper but less fun. Also how much is a schooner of beer in a pub out there now? was $3 when I first went 15 years ago = one quid. went 4 years ago and was 4.50 = 2.25quid. Now if it has gone up to 5 bucks and 1.5 exhange rate, looking at 3.30 for a schooner = five quid for a pint.

Wine was on sale in the MCG in 2010 but was very expensive. Can't remember exactly how much it was but was one of those tiny bottles that is pretty much a single glass serving. It was quite nice wine though (Wolf Blass or Rosemount Estate or similar). Was about 15 dollars though if I recall correctly.

My brother had just bought one of the bottles of red, put it down on the floor then knocked it over when a wicket fell!!

I noticed last time at the MCG that security going into the ground in the morning was very tight and they were checking seals etc on soft drink bottles. But......

Get a pass out and head off to the pub at lunch......no security at all on the way back in. Just got to get through the morning session :D

I wonder how difficult it is to "fake" a seal. Anyone work in a bottling plant?

Trust me, save your $$ and just dont bother with alcohol in grounds or just use the "pass out" option of sliding to a local pub just before lunch. Personally this works fine for me, water in the ground, few beers at a nice pub at lunchtime. Back for the pm action. Only place you cant do this is at The SCG.

Thinking of doing Melbourne and Sydney... Getting a return flight to Melbourne. My sister, bro in law and two nephews live in Sydney, was thinking of asking them to buy all the tickets for me and perhaps getting them boxing day tickets for all the family(as a kind of christmas present). Fligt is £1200 if I leave on christmas eve. Was there v saffers in 08/09 and tkts were 49 bucks, what will they be now? 75 for days 1-4, maybe 600 bucks for eight days , have banked on approx. £500. Might get a lift back to Sydney with my sis(if they come down for the boxing day test) but was thinking of just doing some kind of car share scheme to return to Melbourne for the flight home. Shouldnt cost much, or just hitch hike, So that is £1700 can stay with sis in Sydney, so just some cheapo hostel for 5 days in Melbourne

Can I get tickets cheaper than 1200... Leaving 24 Dec and returning perhaps well into Jan, perhaps 15 Jan or something. I couldnt find any reasonably priced flights to melbourne when coupled with a return from Sydney. Am I looking at the wrong sites?
