Think that will only apply when they have 2 test tours in their summer, such as last year when they had NZ early and then the Indian test at Adelaide was over Australia day.

Can't see it ever happening for an Ashes series, unless as whiteensign said, they play the limited overs before the tests.

Having re- read the artice from the Adelaide newspaper the headline talked about the Australia Day Test but then talks about international cricket being played on that day so I expect the test to be before xmas.
