Hello everyone. We are 7 guys who are hoping to go to the Melbourne and Sydney test matches. We have done our flights and accomodation ourselves and are now want to sort out tickets. I understand CA are not doing ticket only packages. We have an Aussie as an overseas player this year and has already agreed to help us get tickets when they come out in June/July to Australia residents. If we were to do this, would all we need to know is where the Barmy Army will be sitting and then get tickets for that block? When could the Barmy Army know where they will be sitting? I was in Melbourne and Sydney in 2010/11 so for example they were in the same places, could just get tickets there. Would this be the easiest way for us to guarentee tickets with the Army?? |

Hey mate, Have a read of this thread www.barmyarmy.com/forum_new/index.php?v ... =36&t=7502 Unless we get a positive result to this request you wont be able to book tickets in the official Barmy Army areas, they are and have been for the last 2 tours exclusively for official tour groups. The areas of the ground will be known so the best you can hope for is to try and get in bays close by. Also, fairly sure the max ticket allocation will be 4 per day for each Australian Cricket Family Member, so your Aussie mate will not be able to sort all 7 of you. Melbourne is no problem at all, such a huge ground and wont sell out for any days so you can get your tickets when they go on general sale. Sydney being much smaller with a larger local population is much harder for tickets. May pay to get your Aussie mate to get another mate of his to sign up for the ACF so at least you can get 2 groups of tickets for each day you want, but the 2 groups wont be sat together. |

Hello mate, thanks for your reply. Very helpful. When will the army roughly know the area they will be sitting? As I feel this will be out best chance (unless they start selling ticket only packages) Thanks for letting me know about the 4 people max allowance, and luckily we have some more Aussie friends who I’m sure will help us out. Wouldn’t it be just easier to sell ticket only packages? Ha. |

Not sure when we'll hear where the official tour groups will be sat, I'm sure in previous years though it was known on here before the tickets went on sale. Yep, we can only hope CA play fair and consider ticket only packages. As an ex pat living here in HMP Oz It would be excellent for me, as well as all the independent travellers like yourself. Can't speak for Sydney but the MCG is OK even if you can't get in the official stands. They have a small terraced section at the back of each bay, the last 2 boxing day test matches I've just ditched my seat and enjoyed myself at the back with the lads. It's been a great crack. |

This will be my first England tour and I'm doing most of this independently, and was just wondering how people are getting from Melbourne to Sydney. There seems to be a few sightseeing tours between Melbourne and Sydney, via the blue mountains, Canberra etc and was wondering if anyone had done these or whether the Barmy Army had anything set up etc? I don't think I want to do it in a day via plane or train etc I'm going out to Australia with the missus and managed to persuade her to watch a couple of days in Melbourne and Sydney, didn't dare try and make it a 3 week tour full of cricket!!! The holiday is more about seeing Australia and I've convinced her that if we go during the Ashes it will shut me up about going! (hoping to get her hooked for future tours!) I should be ok for tickets as we can book through relatives with the ACF, I was just wondering what sort of price we should expect per day, my family estimated about $60 per day per ticket, but not sure if prices go up for the ashes? Also, can you book in the Barmy Army section through the ACF? I would imagine not, but you never know Apologies if any of this is posted elsewhere, I've had a look but can't find it. Any other info you guys think would be useful would be great, thanks Andy |

Andy LOL, this has been posted, in the posts above yours in this very thread!! At this stage no you can't book tickets through the ACF for the official Barmy Army sections. Although there has been a request made to Cricket Australia for ticket only packages to be made available this time in these sections. Keep an eye on the thread I linked to in my first post. As for ticket prices, MCG was about AUD $45 per day last time, Sydney a bit more expensive. Also, I live in Vic on the South Coast about 3 hours east of Melb and 8 hours to Sydney. Unless you like political landmarks (no where near as historic or impressive as our own) or museums, then forget Canberra, it's a dreary miserable town IMO and honestly not much to see. The only thing I would suggest as being site worthy between the two cities is the drive along the coast road once you get into NSW. The landscape and scenery between about Merimbula and up to Wollongong is stunning, a lovely part of the country with some great sea side towns to stop in. Maybe hire a car and do the drive?? |

I was just wondering whether the Blue Mountains was worth a visit, saw some pics of Wentworth falls and looked a bit more impressive than my leaking gutter pipe at home! I was pondering the self drive and have heard the coastal route is very impressive, I was just concerned with the cost of hotels etc along the way with it being around NYE, and don't think I could afford to stay in Sydney on NYE itself! May have to put a bit more thinking into it |

According to google maps, Melbourne to Sydney is just over 1000kms travelling via the Princes Motorway A1/1, along the coast, and takes just over 12 hours - that seems a tad optimistic though With three clear days, it seems possible to drive from Mel to Syd doing around 300-400kms per day. Is this realistic and if so, where would be the best places to stay at the 300/400k interval? Is it a drive worth doing? I've heard that some of the scenery on that part of the coast is stunning. All advice is welcome! Cheers. |

Some of it is stunning, but not until you get into NSW. It depends on how big a day you can handle driving the first day. If 6.5 - 7 hrs isn't too scary you could get to Merimbula first night which is a very pleasant seaside town with some great places to eat. From there you'll only have about 470 kms to Sydney which you can do at your leisure and enjoy the best parts of the coast. Any of the seaside towns between Merimbula and Sydney are worth stopping in. If that first day sounds a bit too much then look at stopping in Lakes Entrance or Mallacoota first night, both nice enough little towns in Vic which should be a comfortable enough drive from Melbourne. All the best with it!! |
