i wanna go to all 5 test matches and was wondering what the best way to travel around oz? would it be best to book intenal flights now on the internet with my main flight? or could i just turn up at each place and sort it out then when im there? ie jump on a bus/train/plane. what have people done in the past?

If your main flight to/from UK->Oz is with Qantas, you are probably best off booking internal flights with them at the same time, as they can offer good deals booking the whole lot together.

If you are booking separately, my suggestion would be to book sooner rather than later, especially with Perth-Melbourne being in the run-up to Xmas and Melbourne-Sydney being in the run-up to New Year (and with the pound only heading one way against just about every other worldwide currency at the moment!) That said, not all airlines have released their schedules that far ahead yet.

I've used all of Qantas, Jetstar, Tiger, Virgin and Aeropelican for internal flights within Oz on past tours, would basically just go for the cheapest (having added in luggage and other Ryanair-style charges).

If you have a stash of Avios points (airmiles) there's a good tip in the Flights thread below about getting cheap Qantas tickets for Oz internal flights.

PS - I've also done the Perth->Adelaide train before, fantastic experience but probably something I would only do once! Likewise the drive from Adelaide to Ayers Rock!

I usually tend to leave gaps in my itinerary to allow for spontaneity. For back-to-back Tests though, I would want to have things sorted well in advance. In particular I would strongly advise booking your Adelaide to Perth flight ASAP.

If you're planing to fly directly between venues, it's normally best to book early, but if you're flying indirectly, stopping over for a few days somewhere else, you'll probably be better waiting for the airline to have a seat sale before booking. Make sure you're subscribed to the junk e-mails from Virgin Australia's, Qantas', and Jetstar's Australian websites so you get to know when the sales and promotions are on.

Long distance buses and trains are a bit thin on the ground, but if you can find one to take you all or part of the way, they're worth considering for the experience if nothing else. In fact nowadays when I tour, whatever country I'm touring, I rarely fly unless I really have to.

I'm almost certainly going to miss this one. I now have responsibilities (in the form of a very young daughter), which means I can tour less often.
