As far as Christmas Day in the Crown was concerned, I'm pretty sure I tapped up Gilo on Christmas Eve in one of the BA boozers and then had to call the UK with my CC details in order to pay, it may have been the 23rd mind you.

If the BA do the same sort of thing and it's the same sort of price, my advice would be to book early, you lucky lot ?

For New Year's Eve, I'd be looking to lurk in Manley or Darling or possibly go mental and get on a boat in the harbour. (Double dear)

Under no circumstances should you expect to see too much of the fireworks unless you get down to the Circular Key/Opera House area very, very, early. Circa lunchtime would be my guesstamate.

Enjoy.

I went to Darling Habour 06, last minute and managed to get in a bar but would be ideal to book a bar / meal in advance

I'm unfortunately stuck with this view from our apartment so won't be moving far, we're full btw ;)

I was in Sydney this year for NYE and if you want to see the fireworks get to Tarpeian Precinct in the Botanic Gardens about lunchtime. I was there about midday, brought a beach towel and sunbathed, drank, played cards and chatted to all the people around. It is a long, long day but really good atmosphere and unlike NYE in the UK it is hot! Got a great, great view of it all for free.

Don't know if everyone is watching as closely as me, but the pound has gone up about 3c today (to 1.61) and about 18cents in the last 2 months or so. The difference between 1.4 and 1.6(or more?) could be a real bonus of a few hundred quid over the whole trip.

$1.65 now !!!!

More than likely to go down further before you get there.

I've found NYE in Sydney vastly over rated. I'm flying from Melbourne to Hobart on the last day of the Melbourne Test. I'm sure it will be a lot more relaxed there for us old codgers!

I'm not so sure? The only reason sterling dropped this week, was because of comments made by the new Governor of the Bank of England re interest rates. Once the markets realise he was talking bollox and hasn't got a clue, you might find out they bounce back. Also Australia's Economy isn't performing as well as expected which might help a bit. I don't think we'll be seeing the nearly 3 to the pound when I was there late 1998
