Hello chaps,

Mods, feel free to move this if it has a better home.

Basically I'm booked up to watch three tests this winter - Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne. In order to keep costs down a bit I'm looking at staying mainly in hostels but just wondered whether anyone had any recommendations in each of the above cities. Location is obviously quite important but if anyone has some past experience they could pass on, it would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Nick The Greek

When you say location is important do you mean near to the ground or in a good location more generally in the city? I stayed in Glenelg in Adelaide which is a lovely beachside suburb. From memory it was about 20-30 minutes on a tram (very easy) to the city centre which is where the Adelaide Oval is. Try this one - www.glenelgbeachhostel.com.au/

I didn't stay in any hostels in Perth as my cousin lives there but again it depends where you want to be. Freemantle (known as Freo locally) is brilliant, absolutely loved it there and noticed a lot of hostels in great locations. It isn't that close to the WACA though. For that you'd want to be in Perth CBD.

I am just home from living in Melbourne for 14 months (heading back for the Ashes though!) so can give you fair bit of advice on the city although as I was living there I didn't stay in any hostels. Your options will be either St Kilda (beach suburb full of backpackers and prostitutes not far from the CBD) or the CBD itself. For more info on Melbourne see my post from a couple of months ago here: www.barmyarmy.com/forum_new/index.php?v ... =36&t=7706

For Adelaide - I stayed in both Annie's Place and the Blue Galah.

I'd recommend Annie's Place of the two. It's a bit of trek to the ground and to the Barmy HQ (about 30 minutes walk) but it's clean, friendly and not too expensive.

The Blue Galah is much closer to the ground. Again it's pretty good although my experience was slightly clouded by staying in an 8 man dorm the siye of a cupboard. Met some good drinking buddies there though.

Good luck with your hunt

Hi Mate,

I have just booked in to Greenhouse Backpackers for melbourne which was very reasonable. Location appears to be fantastic on Flinders Street.

Cheers the responses chaps.

To be honest, I have only stayed at the odd hostel here and there so when I browse through the websites (hostelworld.com) I'm not entirely sure what I'm after! When I refer to location I guess I'm meaning, 'in the mixer' / not too far from the ground! The hostel in Gleneig looks decent though so might get something booked there.

Also, am I better off sticking with one hostel for the duration of my stay and booking in block before I leave, OR do people just book the odd night and move around to suit?!?

Ta,
N.T.G

Easily the nicest hostel I have stayed at in Melbourne is The Space hotel. Has amazing facilities and isn't too far from the ground. I've stayed at green house too. It wasn't bad and is in a great location, but I much preferred space hotel.

I am yet to book a hostel. Maybe we could organise a barmy army dorm?

The best and most popular hostel on thee 2010 tour was Urban Central in Melbourne, if you are a member of the Barmy Army you can get a 10% discount when booking â€" see the members offers page on the front pahge of the website. I hope this is helpful.

They were also highly recommended by the guys at TNT who we asked to nominate their best hostels in Australia, their advice is below, I hope this helps:

Brisbane â€" Bunk Hostel â€" Big party property, pool, lively outdoor bar with sports and great location.
