Sad news that Bangladesh cricket board have cancelled their up and coming tour to Pakistan 'over security fears'. I had hoped that this was the start of bringing Pakistan back into the test fold, for home series anyway. After tours to India, Oz and Bangladesh Pakistan is the one tour I'd love to go on, now I fear that will certainly never happen in the near future and may not happen in the foreseeable future.

I'm not sad that they have pulled out. They only agreed to tour in the first place due to political pressure from the PCB, and should not have done so. Pakistan is not a safe place to host international cricket at the moment.

I am sad that the situation in the region remains as it does, but until that changes I can't see Pakistan becoming safe enough to host international cricket. I can thoroughly recommend Pakistan as a travel destination, and would probably still be prepared to visit some parts of Pakistan as an individual tourist, but unlike prospective touring cricket teams I don't stay in Western-owned hotels, don't tend to eat in Western owned restaurants or fast food joints, and I'm not likely to be competing or officiating in a high profile international sporting event any time soon!

As you both say sad news, but very predictable.
The tour was the very worst kind of political bribery, arranged by people who would not dream of stepping into Pakistan and putting their own lives at risk.
Lots of Bangladeshi's have long memories of the utter carnage bestowed upon them by their former countrymen, and I suspect an anonymous poll of the players would vote heavily against the tour or in any way assisting Pakistan. I suspect the players silence is because they were advised early doors that an escape plan would be found.
I think you are being positively optimistic Jonny about any future tour. The situation in the north of the country is worsening if anything and as with Afghanistan, the Taliban aint going anywhere anytime soon. I would be surprised if we saw a tour, certainly by a 'white' country in the next ten years.
Whilst Harvey's view is always worth listening to, on this occasion I would like to hear the opinion of the Mother of your child about how she would feel regarding you travelling to Pakistan. Apart from the fact that I would not even consider touring there, I know all my family would be dead against it and the ensuing angst would be unthinkable.
Hope we never have to play them in Dubai again, but I think its inevitable.

My wife knows I don't take stupid risks. There is no blanket warning by the FCO against travel (or even all but essential travel) to Pakistan. There is advice not to travel to certain parts, and avoid all but essential travel to other parts, but that doesn't cover the whole country.

That said, I'm not planning on going any time soon, as much as anything because some of the most interesting bits are out of bounds for all except the "adventurous" at the moment.
