Been a while since I've seen any talk of the DRS on here so was wondering what the general consensus is on it's place in cricket now we've used it for a few years?? Kallis was given out yesterday after a very controversial review.... www.espncricinfo.com/south-africa-v-pak ... 05061.html And over the Australian summer of cricket we saw 3 or 4 clearly wrong decisions turned up through the system. Personally I'm forming the opinion that we were better off without it. We could accept honest umpiring mistakes as being part and parcel of the game, now games are getting held up for an age and we are still not getting the correct results. That to me has to be a far more bitter pill to swallow. Discuss......... |

I like it, though it isn't perfect. One thing that I don't like is now when you see the umpires finger go up it doesn't necessarily mean out, which takes some of the drama away knowing it could be reviewed. Imagine if we'd've had DRS at Trent Bridge in 2005 and Kasper reviewed and got it overturned, doesn't bear thinking about. |

The original idea was to correct real howlers from the umpires (people who are given out LBW to a ball pitching 9 inches outside leg stump). Now we get reviews for the sake of it for LBW that are going to hit half way up middle stump. Why not say you get as many reviews as you like, but every time you get one wrong the oposition gets 20 runs. That way players would only challenge things if they were certain. |

Watching the SA v Pakistan test from CT, the bit that confused me was when the bowling side asked for a review, having had the umpire give the decision Not Out...... the DRS showed it was out but referred to the original Umpires decision which was not out....... so in this case he was out but not out !! |

To me it would be worth it if we knew that when a decision get's reviewed at least we were confident in the correct verdict coming back. Now the game is held up, the moment is lost as we go through the whole circus......and far too often we still end up with crap decisions that blind Freddy can see is wrong. I'll bet to this day Kaspa is still pissed about that Edgbaston call, imagine how he'd feel if he had the option to review it and still got stiffed because the third umpire had some audio turned down that should have been up, or just plainly didn't understand the rules correctly. An honest on field umpire mistake is one thing, players and fans can live with that....it's been part of the game since day dot. But when the DRS fails it is a 100 times worse IMO. |

DRS is there to get rid of the 'howlers'. Clarke would have been given out today for 30 odd. In a perverse sort of way hopefully he'll go on to score a double hundred and, maybe, just maybe, India will finally come on board. There will still be errors, no system can eradicate all such, but DRS is an improvement on a system which allows cheats, who know they are out, piling up records which were just plainly wrong at the time and in history ... |

A definite yes. DRS has been the most important and beneficial change to cricket since the introduction of helmets in that it encourages batsmen to play shots which otherwise they would be afraid of doing. And not only has it removed really bad howlers from the game but I think it's also improved umpiring in general. Technology isn't quite there yet to include instant snicko but when it does the DRS will be complete. Entertainment-wise it's brilliant. I don't mind the breaks at all as it only serves to heighten the excitement and DRS is also a useful way to explain the LBW rule to people who don't understand cricket. And the longer India prevaricates about introducing it the more time we hjave to laugh at their misfortune when decisions go against them and it affects the outcome of the whole game. |

I'd laugh more if it wasn't against the Aussies, as, of course, by end of play, Clarke has gone onto a century. Another century for the history books ... records which don't distinguish between walkers and others |

Interesting to hear peoples opinions on this, looks like I'm out on my own with thinking it is rubbish as it is now. I think there is a definite place for it in our game, but until the following happens I can't accept that it is a benefit as it is..... - Mandatory for every test, everywhere in the world. - The same technology available for every test, everywhere in the world. (This will mean the ICC has to front the cost and not leave it to local broadcasters) - Take it off the players and give it to the umpires to use at their discretion. - Instant snicko is available to back up hotspot. - The 3rd umpires know the rules!!! And have strict guidelines which they universally understand and apply on how to use and interpret the technology. My biggest beef with it all is the mistakes the 3rd umps make......this should not happen.....ever. |

The Jaques Kallis debacle was caused by two umpiring errors not DRS. I too love DRS, and even when watching a game live at the stadium, DRS adds to the spectacle and level of excitement. The crowds seem to love it. I was at Cape Town for the recent test, and couldn't find one single person in the crowd who doesn't like it. Equally I don't detect any call amongst players, umpires, media or cricket authorities (India excepted) that want to get rid of it. Every single test match which doesn't involve India is using it, even though it is not mandatory. Surely that says it all. |
