Whilst I can't stand his commentary, especially his stints on Channel 9, this is a very interesting piece from Mark Nicholas: www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/604452.html These are the discussions that as a cricket fan are the most interesting. So who would you put as the best after The Don? I find it hard to argue with Mark's final conclusion and would go as far to say that Sobers was the best cricketer to have ever lived. Also agree with Sir Geoffrey that "that Sobers, Richards and Lara had genius, no one else". Lara and Sir Viv were the best I have ever seen... M |

Can only comment on batsmen I have seen. Best by far was IVA Richards. Best English batsman when in full flight was Gower. |

I love questions like this..Much as I love the guy, it defo ain't Ali Cook. Lara the best I've seen. The best aussies? Punter, G Chappell, V Trumper, nah, can't be having any of them. Pak/SL... Miandad, Inzy, Jaya, Sanga no. India... Tendulkar possibly Saffers.... G Pollock, Kallis?... no Zim, Bangles, NZ.... noone. England.... L Hutton, W Hammond, J Hobbs... think Hammond and Hobbs are fair shouts but...... Windies... Richards, Lara, Sobers (think it would prob have to be one of these 3 tbh) A bit of trivia.... 46% of all tests matches ever played(about 140 years worth of history) have taken place since Tendulkar's debut-- ie he has been around for nearly half of the history of test cricket. 82% of all odis have taken place since his odi debut (tbf he has now retired). |

Don't think any of us are actually qualified to answer the question really. None of us saw the greats of the 'golden age', ie the immortal Victor Trumper or WG himself. Follow that with the teams at the end of the 20's-30's. Just too many to contemplate. Good to see some fun debate whilst we are embarassing ourselves out here. The team I mean. |

Just to further this thread here's a few more ex-cricketers (including Geoffrey) adding their views on the next greatest after Bradman: www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/626396.html Much as it pains me I'm agreeing with Ian Chappell?! |

Good article, in fact made even better by some of the well reasoned posts which support it. Just re-affirms my position that you can't compare these greats from different era's. Might be interesting if some-one (not Duckworth -Lewis) could introduce a quotient for the differing factors in the the respective era's, ie uncovered wickets, changes in the laws etc. but would never solve the mystery of the argument, thank heavens. |
