You can't blame Cook's captaincy for a batting collpase against a mediocre bowling attack.
But you can blame England's old and new management teams for persisting with an opening batsman whose scores in his most recent Test innings are thus.

For his own sake even more than England's Cook needs to be stood down before the India tests and sent back to county cricket to repair a damaged technique that shows no signs of being repaired.
Ultimately there comes a time when highly-paid managers and cricket executives have to take a difficult decision - that's why they're highly paid.
A defeat tomorrow will confirm England's meteoric slide down the Test rankings and a defeat on English soil against Sri Lanka should raise even more alarm bells than the winter's debacle down under.

You suspect nothing will happen until after the India series. That could now be humiliating.........

Nah, don't agree with this at all. Sending a player like Cook back to county cricket will do nothing to fix his technical (or mental) flaws, he will just continue to plunder rank ordinary Div 2 attacks as he already has been this year.

The bloke has scored 386 runs in 5 innings at an average of 77.2 for Essex this year mate..........what f@#king good has it done him??

I'm not against relieving him of the captaincy, but the only way he will fix his batting is to keep playing test cricket.

Cooks issues are mental not technical IMO. He has always been suspect to the full ball outside off, when he's playing well he just leaves them the f@#k alone.

Agree.
I think the time has come to relieve him of the captaincy, he looked totally down trodden in the interviews last night. However, he needs to stay in the team and get confidence back.
The bigger issue is who replaces him as captain. There would be question marks next to anyone in the current squad. My choice would be bringing in an experienced player back from the counties (Keys maybe) with a view to them doing the job short term until someone like Root is ready to take over. Only problem with this would be that the new captain needs accomadating in the order at the expense of a young player who has jsut scored runs.

The problem is if you relieve Cook of the captaincy you also remove any logical reason to keep him in the side.
An opening batsman who has failed to deliver for so long shouldn't remain in place on the international stage in the vain hope he'll regain his old form
England have been bailed out far too often by their middle order and we've kept faith for far too long with out of form batsmen.
We need to develop a ruthless streak, picking and dropping on merit and making clear no-one is above the chop.
Kinda like Australia does.
Let's say Cook struggles in the summer against India - do we persist into the World Cup and then the next Ashes.
Because it'll be too late to change by then.

He should be given chance against India to improve both facets, batting and captaincy. Then moves can be made if necessary.

I'll be honest mate, if he carries on with the captaincy, I just don't think his form will come back over the series. After the last test, he was making all the right noises but his eyes looked totally shot.
Also, he not exactly new to the role and yet his tactical awareness during games is getting worse not better. I honestly cannot remember a more naive captain regarding bowling changes and field settings.
I do ,however, believe that he is still a quality batter and runs will return. You just don't lose that ability over night. You may lose confidence, but that is a diiferent matter.

Some well reasoned points all round and I tend to agree with virtually everybody to some extent
I think you can't 'make' a captain and its fairly obvious that Cooky isn't a natural. He has the look and demeanour of the proverbial 'dead man walking' and I believe will be relieved when the captaincy is taken from him, he just doesn't realise it yet.
I firmly believe he would benefit from a spell in CC, but not as preiously correctly stated in the 2nd Div where he can simply milk runs. Should test batsmen (captains) be playing 2nd Div cricket ? thats another matter, but we need to find him a way back to form and I don't think the way to do that is against test attacks who all know exactly where to get to you at present.
Realise I probably haven't moved the discussion on that much but I really don't know where we go at the mo': My choice would be Prior and lend Cooky to Lancs for a couple of weeks but I know some would say I'm biased. ;)
