Some people rise to captaincy, others don't. Since becoming SL captain 11 matches ago, Angelo Mathews has averaged over 80 with the bat. Leading by example. He has got the right name ; what a pity he is not English.
Cook has to go as captain, but who replaces him.

I have maintained the opinion that if there is no stand out candidate from within the team (which there is'nt), then look outside it for the short term. Chris Reade would be an option, especially with Prior out. Or Rob Keys. As I say, either would be short term until the likes of Root are ready.

Well,he should have gone on 15 and he fannied about like a newbie when he reached the nervous nineties and ultimately he shat the course.
But for Cookie and England's future today could be a significant turning point.
You'd have to be a cold-hearted bastard not to to think so.

Spot on Rizzla. F#$king over the moon for Cook........he just needed to get an ugly score under his belt and he's done that. Hopefully we can press home the advantage today and break this streak.

We've had a few captains sadly out of form over the years as well. Remember G.Chappell who said something like, "I'm not batting all that badly, I just keep getting out?!" Ponting and Clark have had extended periods of low scores as well as I recall.
Surely, eventually, good batsmen rediscover some form and make some runs, usually with a bit of luck.
Good on Cook for persevering and good on the selectors for sticking with him I say. I'm not sure Root is the answer yet and, from afar at least, I don't think Broad is the answer. Unless there's an absolute standout applicant for the job, why take the risk of potentially damaging a good young career by elevating them to the captaincy way too early.
Just my view from the colonies..........................

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
I'm delighted he's got a few runs at last but it was against a piss-poor bowling attack.
And I still don't think he's ideally suited for either captaincy or short-term cricket.
Unfortunately it won't be long before the Convicts put him to the test.
