If you book a Thomson holiday to say Tenerife for two weeks, and then book the same holiday yourself, the difference will be miniscule. i.e hardly worth doing yourself, because by booking a package Thomson (ATOL) are responsible for all your costs whilst there and particularly if there are any flight delays, or airlines going bust.
However in the case of sports tours there are massive differences. They have obviously find a niche in the market here where people are prepared to pay for a package, possibly without realising you can make substantial savings by doing it yourself.

I can see both sides to this discussion - there's definitely value in having everything done for you and ideally, I'd like to do it that way and know there's always going to be a cost for that convenience. My problem was being stung by the single supplement which was an additional £800, taking it just over my price range. I had no choice but to sort as much out myself.

When you book a holiday with them 9 times out of 10 you are on one of there planes aswel with there Reps etc but in this case there just banging you on the sri lankan airlines schedule flight to colombo. They will have also got these seats at a massive discounted price because they will have booked a block number which will be cheaper then we could ever book on ebookers/expeida etc.
