General question here, nothing to do with cricket apart from it will be during my ashes 2013 trip back to blighty!!

Has anyone ever flown Iceland Express from Stansted to Reykjavik?
They seem really cheap, what they like?
Also, anyone in the know (ie; Boddingtons) why they aren't taking bookings after next month?

Thanks

I flew with them during the brief time they had a summer-only service to Winnipeg from Reykjavik and were offering through tickets (and connections) from Gatwick. The airline they had an arrangement with for some of their routes, Astraeus, went bust, and they dropped all their North American routes around that time.

About the best thing I can say about them is that they got us there and back, and not massively late. In all my years of flying I had never seen hand-written luggage labels until I flew with them. I assumed their computer must have broken down, but no, it was the same both ways!

Planes with worn interiors, lack of communication or customer service, and staff who gave the impression of not really knowing what they were doing presented an image suggesting a right cowboy outfit. However they were the best part of £300 return cheaper than anyone else flying to Winnipeg in the high season, so we didn't complain or regret our choice.

I don't know why they're not taking bookings after next month, but it might be something to do with the launch of a new no-frills airline flying pretty much the same routes. I'm not certain enough of my ground to be able to comment on whether this new airline is owned by the same people and being used either to rebrand Iceland Express or shut it down and start up again using cheaper staff, so I'll provide a couple of links and leave you to draw your own conclusions.

Thanks for that Harvey, it's another option to check out, Wow Air are priding themselves on having the least delays of the 3 airlines operating in Iceland in the first half of July, with 96% of flights being on time, followed by Iceland Express on 94% and the Icelandair on 90%.

We are extremely proud to announce that WOW air has been the most punctual airline in Iceland for the last month at Keflavik airport according to the latest calculations from the tourist web www.turisti.is , 96% of the flights were on time. In case of delays there was only half to one minute on average!

Are you certain you didn't wander onto a BA flight by mistake?

Yes. My luggage arrived OK.

I see WOW are advertising on cricinfo now.

All their flights appear to go east from Iceland, nothing westwards towards Canada. The price is cheap enough, just not certain if there is a lot to do when you get there.

If you're even remotely an outdoorsy type person, there's loads to see and do in Iceland. It's seriously expensive though.

I did hear a storey about people flying to Iceland taking cans of beer for their duty free because it's so expensive to buy once you're over there.

Absolutely. If you're going for more than a couple of days you must make sure to max out your duty free booze allowance.

Surprisingly despite the high booze prices, Reykjavik is a real party city on Friday and Saturday nights. If you're out before about 11pm you wouldn't know it, though! It's only about that time that people hit the town having spent the previous couple of hours at home getting hammered on homebrew and various forms of hooch made from things such as potatoes.

The scenes are comparable with late nights in English cities except much friendlier, and without the constant feeling that you're about to be picked on and glassed by some bonehead who can't hold his beer.

This is nothing more than a timetabling issue. Stansted is only a seasonal route. End of schedule is 31AUG12.
