 Simply one of England's best ever captains and made Ponting look the half-wit that he is.

That he bowed out at the right time should add to his aura and I hope everyone at the Oval will be singing his name in absentia.

We may just have seen the last of a legend.

 Heard the news over in Krakow on a stag weekend. Got back to the hotel and watched the press conference at about 2am - very emotional and shows the passion the bloke has for English test cricket. A fine captain who has given us some great days aswell as one of the all time great conversion rates from 50's to 100's (a sign of a trully class batsman). I hope he returns, but i'd imagine he'll be third of fouth in the list.

FTR only KP has more hundreds for us since Vaughan came back in the side.....

 Agree, and think he was shrewd to get out now. Obvious problem between coach, selectors, and captain.We appear to have no clear plan or strategy.

So many of the current set up appear weak, compared to the Fletcher set up (continuing theme of mine). Keepers, lets pick one who can keep and bat. Top order batsmen who impose themselves on the bowlers (could change with KP making decisions). Anderson, does he really threaten good batsmen? apologies to NZ, etc

 Gutted to see Vaughan go. A batting average does not a captain make - Brearley being the shining example.

 Anderson is very limited in his ability though. Sure he can have cracking days, but then so has every test bowler once in their career.

The Aussies will be all over him as they will pick him out to be the weak link. I really do believe that the selectors should be persisting with Broad to get him bowling better as his batting is fantastic.

In the 05' Ashes win, we didn't really have a weak bowling link. Even Giles didn't leak runs, he was there to keep it tight to rest the other bowlers, whilst the others struck in devastating spells

Apart from the fact in 9 test matches in 2008 he has averaged 24 with the bat. The lowest since he got called in the England set up in 99'. When he chose to resign and take a rest from cricket I think the selectors where mighty relieved, otherwise they would've been forced to drop their captain!!!

Whilst I agree largely with you and I too am gutted to see him go, with only 5 batsman in the team it is very difficult to carry one for so long and expect success. I hope he takes some time out, plays some cricket for Yorkshire, gets himself right, gets some confidence and comes back to slot in at no.3 for England again.
