Am planning on doing 6-8 months travelling commencing later this year and am factoring the SA tour as the slice of meat in the travel sandwich. Am desperately awaiting the dates and the venues to get things booked in so i dont suppose anyone who has done this one before can recall how far in advance they announced them last time?

At the moment i plan to arrive in SA 10th December (a little late), but I have the feeling the first test may have been and gone given the party arrives in November. I notice last time we toured the tests didn't kick off until 17th December however the tour started a month later and finshed a month later the the one planned for 09/10.

Also would those of you who have been before always expect the the Xmas test will be in Durban and the NY test in Cape Town?

Any insight from previous tours would be helpfull - cheers.

Sedge

Traditionally, Durban was on Boxing Day and Cape Town at New Year. In recent series, Cape Town has still been the New Year Test.

No idea if they will remain or if our players will want to come home for Christmas.

Best suggestion would be the SA Cricket Board \ Tourist office

However, like most countries, there should be no problem in getting tickets for the Tests.

Enjoy your tour - make sure you do the Garden Route

Yes, I think you can pretty much bank on Cape Town being the New Year Test. Not sure about the others. There are conflicting stories about whether the series is 4 or 5 Tests. It was reported last year that the series is being given icon status, meaning 5 Tests from this year onwards, but some sources still say 4.

My money's on Port Elizabeth, Durban, Cape Town, Joburg, and Centurion, same as last time.

Last time the SACB sold tickets to all the games on-line to be picked up at the venue. You should definitely order advance tickets for Cape Town. No desperate panic to do it the minute they go on sale or anything, but it was very well attended last time, and not much (if anything) was available on the day. One or two regulars were apparently reduced to tapping up members of the England touring party for complimentary tickets! Incidentally, last time the Barmy Army was allocated the grass bank at Castle Corner, where you could buy a beer without missing a ball. The tickets sold through the Barmy Army were not outrageously expensive, either. £40 for a 5-day pass was not too bad IMO, although ultra-cheapskates could go on the opposite side of the ground for about half that on tickets bought direct from the SACB.

I would also be inclined to order Centurion tickets (if we play there) for the weekend at least, because surprisingly Supersport Park got what may have been its first ever full house for a Test match! Only at the weekend though. The rest of the time it was quite sparse. Just order grass tickets, which cost peanuts.

From watching SA Tests on TV, attendances seem to have fallen away somewhat since our last visit, but maybe they'll pick up again now with SA playing so well.

Emailed the South African cricket board about dates, why not?

Thanks as ever for your wisdom Big H, not surprised to hear that Cape Town is one of the few Tests where you genuinely need to buy in advance!

I e-mailed the SACB a little while ago and was told that the dates are likely to be announced about March.
