Has anyone experience of turning up at Indian airports without a ticket and getting a flight at short notice ?

There are loads of flights from Mumbai to Chennai but I'm reluctant to book one as I could be delayed or the game could be called off or whatever.

Obviously, I'm aware of the low cost carriers business model, i.e. less seats available, higher the prices. But are remaining tickets sold at the airport ?

I have done it once before without any problems, but obviously it's subject to availability. Airlines normally have a ticket office at the airport, usually located in the terminal(s) used by the airline concerned.

I turned up at Mumbai International on Wednesday. It wasn't that pleasant in terms of atmosphere and gambled on the first test actually being played in Chennai (if at all). Went to domestic airport (not far) and bought a ticket through Kingfisher Airlines to Chennai at a cost of Rs 7,115. You do the maths Approx 90quid.

The ticket office is just outside and we were on the plane within two hours and the plane was half empty.

Hope this is useful and hope to see you there. Oh yeah if booking online also try indigo, spice jet or mdlr.

I Arrived in Mumbai monday morning and managed to get a cheap flight to Chennai :-)

As always in India there was a complication. After being passed from pillar to post to find the transfer bus from international to domestic airports, they wouldn't let me board because I didn't have a flight ticket.

I tried explaining that the game had only been confirmed while I was somewhere over the Middle East, but rules is rules and I couldn't get the transfer.

I ended up getting a Rs200 prepaid taxi and bought my ticket from Spicejet. I bought it about 90 mins before departure but they didn't charge a ridiculous fare. It was Rs4900 (GBP70) incl taxes, just a few hundred more than the cheapest internet fare I'd seen.

Anyhow, I'm staying out of town for a couple of days and heading into the City on Wednesday.

Phil , if you're reading this send me an email ..... I've lost your address.

If anyone knows Phil D's address please PM me.

We had to go down a local travel agent on Baga Beach to get ours booked as you needed to email scanned copies of your credit card to book over the phone. Got Goa-Chennai for 75 quid, not bad 24 hours before the flight takes off. Off to beach for some beans on toast now followed by a few Kingfishers.

Cya all in Chennai tommorrow - we will be down the ground to get tickets around midday on Wednesday.

Sorry to be the resident miserable git but that sounds like a potentially serious card fraud risk. Those emails of scanned cards could easily be forwarded to anyone anywhere. I suggest you check the balance fairly regularly so that if anything untoward happens you can get on to your card issuer asap.

Got cheap internal flights thru make my trip.com, they only put 100 inr on top of the flight companies prices, and they except uk credit cards unlike some flight websites.
Hows chennai going? to all you lucky enough to be there, what are they letting you take in the ground? and are all them empty seats on sky patio chairs?
